If you’re a regular on this blog, you’ll have discovered that I’m a huge fan of recycling and reusing clothes. But in this post I will be drifting from the fashion scene into the culinary world. 

In the midst of making Tacos I remembered that people often use the avocados from the guacamole sauce as a facial to rejuvenate their skin and keep it healthy. But what about the remaining ingredients? They don’t just add a taste of flavour to the Mexican sauce, you can actually use them to benefit your health or to simply beautify yourself as well.

Skin deep: Tomatoes and Garlic

The tomato is a "functional vegetable" (or fruit, whatever floats your boat). That means it does not only provide basic nutritional benefits, but also health benefits that go beyond that. Ever tried out a tomato scrub? The vegetable is high in antioxidants such as Vitamin C, of which a low intake can cause saggy skin and blemishes. Even Make-Up Guru Michelle Phan tried out this method in her earlier years on YouTube. Watch her video here for a skin deeper understanding of what the scrub is good for!

As for garlic, sorry to burst your bubble all you Bram Stoker fans, it turns out it doesn't really keep vampires away but instead it helps reduce pimples and skin irritations. The plant has been proven to be anti-inflammatory; simply cut a garlic clove and place it on the area of irritation for a few seconds, but be careful not to leave it on for too long, as it might dry out your skin.

Ginger for the soul

Some beneficial facts about this flowering plant are that it may relieve forms of nausea, help fight flus and it's constituent 6-gingerol (the substance that gives ginger its spiciness) has also proven to be effective with fighting cancer-cells and ulcers.

The plant originates from China, but it has become a national treasure, if you will, throughout all of Asia. It has been used for homeopathic medicinal purposes for centuries now, but the root is also known to heal dermatological problems when mixed with calomel (mercurous chloride) - but be aware of mercury poisoning. The book Ginger, Garlic & Green Onion by Wang Fuchin and Duan Yuhua offers information on various Chinese food therapies.

Lemons and Limes

Lemon or limes can be digested to battle constipation and their natural compound limonene have anti-cancer effects.

Here are three other reasons why you need more citrus fruits in your life:

          1. When rubbed, the skin of a lemon can restore softness and add moisture to dry skin.

          2. In combination with baking soda lemons and limes can be used as a teeth whitener, but going              overboard can lead to an extreme removal of the enamel on your teeth, which then leaves                      your teeth prone to chronic tooth sensitivity and tooth fracture for instance.

          3. A few drops of lemon essential oil can help those pesky canker sores heal faster.

In case of cold, use onion

The reason why onions are able to relieve a sore throat is due to their richness of quercitin, an antioxidant that has antiviral and antibacterial activity. Since I can remember onions have been treated as a remedy for colds in my household. But by crushing onions and laying them on your forehead and temples migraines and headaches can also be reduced. Who knew?

Whether you plan on eating the ingredients, or making use of them to benefit your health and outer appearance is up to you. But at least you know what to use when you're sick and your cooling pad decides to go missing.
